“Jack Nicholson ate my dog that was eating my homework.” “Jack Nicholson is doing coke in the boys bathroom.” “Jack Nicholson has declared defcon six.” “Jack Nicholson is hitting on me…with a golf club” Yes these are things we are used to hearing a lot over the years. And what can be agreed upon by these statements is that Jack Nicholson is one crazy motherfucker. But that Jack Nicholson will not be found in About Schmidt directed by Alexander Payne. In this flick Jack plays a 67 year old widower coming to terms with where he has taken his life. I liked this film, yes, I admit. It is told with such a blandness that could only be conjured up in Nebraska where the film is set. It is a sad thing to watch and a startling thing to realize most if not all of us will be dealing with the same shit late in our lives. Jack gives a great performance, he seems as old as he is…real old. I didn’t ask my self once during the film why he wasn’t doing any coke. Go see this film, it’s a very subtle yet powerful film. You might dislike it at first but your inability to stop thinking about it will change your mind. Quality.   4 1/2 out of 5 Stars More Movie Reviews 2002 |
