Gangs of New York By Mike Morelli
This was the first Martin Scorcese film I have seen in the theaters (Don’t blame me for not seeing Bringing out the Dead, it was out of the theater by the time I drove there), and this was his biggest work yet. The film, although greatly flawed, is also amazingly original and extremely fun to watch. GONY opens up with the famous brawl set to take place between the Dead Rabbits and the Native gangs, and this completely gets the audience pumped up for what surely will be a classic Scorcese scene, one which I thought would equal his work in Goodfellas and Casino. But, instead, Harvey Weinstein takes over directing for this scene, cutting it down to a simple montage with gay Christain Rock and Roll music that should be playing when The Rock and his gay little side kick save and then fuck the princess. After that horribly disappointing scene, the movie begins to pick up the pace, and moves along pretty well (although it should have been left uncut, Harvey Weinstein). The movie is one of the greatest of the year, even despite its flaws, and should win this years Best Picture Oscar. And, finally, Martin Scorcese, should win the Best Director award, for he handled this movie like no other director could. Gangs of New York deserves your money…so go see it you cheap fuck !
