In Response to Skin Cancer , MoveOn.org co-founder starts NARC by Mike Morelli Added September 18, 2005 Joan Blades, who in 1998 co-founded what would become Moveon.org, got up in a suprise press conference to announce her diagnosis of Skin Cancer, and her formation of the new political action committee to fight it.
Nicknamed NARC, the North American Radiation Coalition is her new movement to find out what radiation is.
"I spent a little too much time in the sun. It made my skin constantly red, my hair a little yellow, and my eyes constantly squinting. But, what I did not know, was that there was a killer hiding in that sun. My doctor told me its radiation. Well, I do know much, but I do not know what radiation is. That is why I am hereby founding NARC, the North America Radiation Coalition, to help me find out about what exactly radiation is and who is really behind it," she told the media in her press conference. The stated goal of NARC: What is radiation? Why did radiation give Joan skin cancer? When is it (radiation) going to stop? With seed money from MoveOn.org, NARC is going to ask around to find out what exactly radiation is and why it gave Joan cancer. When they find out, they will then complain harder. Their complaining has already begun, with a vigil outside of Bill Gates Seattle mansion. Led by 20 year old Janine Collins, they say they are not leaving until Bill Gates tells them what radiation is. "Bill Gates is smart. He knows lots of things about lots of stuff and has lots of money. We're not leaving until Mr. Gates explains why Joan got cancer. She's a victim and that gives her the moral authority to say things and have people listen to her," Collins stated in her third press conference in four minutes. The MoveOn.org crowd, bringing in much more media attention, joins three other larger protest groups outside of Bill Gates home, The World Trade Protestors Against Globaliztion, The We're Lukeworm on Globalization Group, and The American Contacts Manufacturers Group.
He has yet to respond to any of the movements outside of his house, but the current media frenzy around NARC raises the possibility that he will. As for politics, no politicians have directly asnwered her queary, despite her attempts at contacting "over 400 Senators and even the President of Mexico, Mr. Fidel Castro. " Neither Havana nor Mexico City have confirmed hearing anything, but Senator Ed "Ted" Kennedy did confirm he recieved her message, but denied he cared. Superstar protestor Cindy Sheehan offered her support, saying she thought it was a smart idea. Besides her, most other protest groups have avoided championing NARC, mainly because its not as full of shit as their own causes. 2005 |
