Irreversible
By John Morelli

The theatre goes dark and the credits roll first. Then appears a warning that says something to the effect of “Realism, Violence, Noe”. This is a warning; this film is not for the feint of heart and not for the weak minded. This is Irreversible. This flick is directed by Gaspar Noe. It starts of with wild camera movements that look like that of a drunken retard. The film then progresses or digresses backwards. This is done to make the overall effect of the story more powerful, but we will get to that later. From the intense and disgusting scene in the nightclub called “Rectum” to the most brutal rape ever caught on film in the Tunnel; this film grabs you by the testicles (or breasts) and doesn’t let go. But though it catches all of this violence and debauchery on the seedy side of Paris, it also catches the more innocent time between friends and lovers. This adds to the sting of the film. We see how life can take turns at any moment and how it will never be the same again.

This was a very movie, an acquired taste; even I had my doubts going into the “Rectum” club scene. But my doubts were gone once I saw a man’s head being caved in by a fire extinguisher. This film doesn’t hold anything back, it holds your eyes open to the violence that occurs every day and forces you to take a long hard look. I not only like this film because of its excellent filmmaking technique, but I like it for what it attempted to do and successfully completed. Irreversible is fucking nuts. I give it 4 and a half stars.
